9/26/09 100-year Gunnison Tunnel celebration. Saturday marked the 100-year celebration of the Gunnison Tunnel, one of many projects built under the Federal Reclamation Act of 1902 (a.k.a. Newlands Act). The purpose was to tunnel water from the Gunnison River through the hills east of Montrose to potential farm land in the Uncompahgre Valley, swelling the agriculturual potential of Montrose, Olathe and Delta.

The Bylers grow garlic organically, offering nine varieties, with plans for more. They've been steadily expanding the crop, from planting 3 pounds in 2003, to planting 1,000 pounds last year (on a three-quarter acre, irrigated plot) � with a yield, so far of 43,000 harvested bulbs.
